A predicted Backpacker Boom! According to The Gold Coast Bulletin (December 2001) the number of Asian backpacker visitors are now competing with traditional visitors for hostel bunks on the Gold Coast which is a vital boost since international tourism niche markets have declined 12 per cent after the September terrorist attacks.

Australia is viewed by them as a safer destination.
